Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
Intent ("Intent," "we," "us") is an app and website that lets you chat with an AI assistant and, based on the things you ask about, quietly introduces you to other people exploring similar topics. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using Intent you agree to this policy.
Information we collect
- Account information. Your email address, a display name, and a password (stored only as a salted hash — we never store your password in plain text).
- Your conversations. The messages you send to the AI assistant and the responses you receive. These are stored so your chat history persists across sessions.
- Intent profile & matching data. We use AI to derive a short, structured summary of what you appear to be looking for (interests, goals, topics) from your conversations, and a numeric representation (an "embedding") used to find similar users. This produces match scores and rationales between you and other users.
- Connections & direct messages. Friend/connection requests you send or receive, and the direct messages you exchange with people you connect with.
- Safety data. If you block or report another user, we record that action (including the reason and any details you provide) to keep the community safe.
- API keys you add (optional). If you choose to connect your own AI provider with an API key in the mobile app, that key is stored only on your device's secure storage and is sent directly from your device to that provider — never to our servers.
- Technical information. Basic data needed to operate the service, such as your IP address (used for rate limiting and abuse prevention) and standard request logs.
How we use your information
- To provide the core service: answer your questions and keep your chat history.
- To build your intent profile and match you with other users who share similar interests.
- To enable connections and direct messaging between users who choose to connect.
- To keep the service safe and reliable (rate limiting, blocking, reviewing reports).
- To maintain, debug, and improve the product.
AI processing and third parties
To generate answers and power matching, the content of your messages and derived profile text is sent to third-party AI and search providers that operate as our processors:
- OpenRouter (and the underlying model providers it routes to) — to generate AI chat responses, extract your intent profile, score matches, and create embeddings.
- Tavily — to perform web searches that ground the AI's answers with citations.
These providers process your data to deliver their service and are subject to their own privacy terms. If you use the optional "bring your own API key" feature in the mobile app, your messages go directly to the provider you configured, under that provider's terms.
What other users can see
Your private AI chats are never shown to other users. When you are a strong match with someone, they may see your display name, an intent-level summary of what you're looking for, and the reason you were matched. If you both connect, the direct messages you exchange are visible to each other. We do not sell your personal information.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from within the app (Sign out / account menu → Delete account). Deleting your account erases your profile, chats, messages, matches, connection requests, and related safety records. Some minimal operational logs may persist for a short period for security and abuse-prevention purposes.
How we protect your information
Passwords are stored as salted hashes, traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS), authentication uses signed session tokens, and access to internal administrative data is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data.
Children
Intent is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices
- Delete your account and associated data at any time from the app.
- Block or report other users from within a conversation.
- Remove any AI provider API key you added, which deletes it from your device.
- Contact us to ask about the data associated with your account.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, by notice within the app.
